For the love of Franz & Fashion

John Varvatos is by far my favorite American designer, so when I opened up the pages of GQ  recently and saw his Franz Ferdinand spread, well honestly, I let out a whimper (just a small one).

They're touting the Spring 2009 collection, and touting it well they are...

Dorchester is Pretty Dope

Just saw this ingenious campaign by Dorchester Collection.  A lot of hotels, especially LA ones tout celebrity connections and history, but talk about a visual connection.  This is where advertising may, just may be a better approach than PR.

Well advertising and PR, because isn't this exactly the kind of buzz that results?

Say Halow to Mei Lil Frien'

I quickly realized that a blogger is only as good as his camera, thus I equipped myself with this lil' number! Like? It's the Sony DSC 150, 8.1MP, 5x digital zoom (I think) and 1080p HD capability. So, from now on know that DG is only using the finest. Haha, well actually it was a great price at Best Buy.... Pick one up while supplies last!

Beverage of the "Dioses"

I may have unearthed one of the few reasons to pay a visit to the quasi-interesting, but definitely culinary-worthy town in the East Bay known as Oakland, CA. One Sunday I found myself roaming the Temescal Farmer's Market near Berkeley. Sure the enchanting sounds of drums at 8AM could have been sufficient a wake up call, but I was there for another reason. Blue Bottle Coffee Co., I am proud to say I stumbled upon it before they made GQ Magazine's January culinary issue.

For coffee lovers like moi, this is definitely the drink of gods. These guys take their coffee seriously, as one should. A selective bean selection, roasting and distribution process ensures an intense experience, every time. Turns out they offer a coffee subscription program, something that would make for a, ahem wonderful birthday gift for your's truly. Take a look for yourself - www.bluebottlecoffee.net

Unfortunately for me, my favorite blend, "Nayarita" a dark, but subtle coffee with hints of Mexican cinnamon is only brewed in-store. Who's up for a roadtrip?

J'Adore

A long time ago, ok, maybe not so long ago, during my days as the West Hollywood PR guy, I stumbled upon a charming, tucked away spa on Nemo Street. It was my job. That is, walking in, taking a tour, talking to the owners/managers and then trying to convince them to give my pool of media, freebies. And time and time again I would often get looks of confusion, concern or outright disdain from the variety of businesses, especially the notorious spas. This particular day was different. Not because I was treated like royalty or because my wine glass had no bottom here. But because from the first day I walked in, I felt special, loved, heck even wanted? This place had a story, a personality by the name of Topper Schroeder, a 70-something year old man who loved and lived more passionately than I ever knew at that point. He was a record exec back in the day who ventured down the fragrance path in hopes of creating something he could wear without risking an asthma attack. Several years later, The Gendarmerie was created to give life to all he embodied, a love for people, friends and the good life. Now, The Gendarmerie continues to hold a special place in my heart, my home away from home, if you will. Among other things, haircuts, manicures, facials, massages, conversations and friends will always find you here. People often say LA is so cold and lonely. They obviously haven't spent one single minute at The Gendarmerie. http://www.thegendarmerie.com/

A Special Place?

I stumbled upon this unassuming new development after hanging out on the Cahuenga corridor, where a kind of "we're trying hard to make this look like this isn't master-planned" development is taking hold. Notwithstanding the obvious corporate influence, this place is an entirely new concept to LA, where fashion, art music melt. I plan to head back often for creative inspiration and some popcorn at the "Snackbar."

On the corner near Sunset and Cahuenga, Hollywood, CA.

From the horse's mouth:
A new retail experiment in Hollywood, CA, Space 15 Twenty creates an opportunity for Urban Outfitters to collaborate with creative brands we find inspiring and interesting.A courtyard leads from each store to an outdoor performance space and adjoining gallery. Both of which encourage designers and artists to become part of a curated environment. Working with neighboring music, film and art establishments, both courtyard and adjoining gallery will present a rotating cast of local musicians and artists.

So Fresh and So Clean, Clean

"You smell so good" someone uttered. I said "thanks" - in a "that's enough from you" tone. You see I'm the kinda guy that likes to feel special and smell clean, and keep it all to myself in the process. But since I have commited to divulging my favorites in this dossier, well here you go. No, it's not from a fancy fragrance company, you won't see billboards hawking it alongside Puffy, and well, that's 80 percent of the allure.

It's "Sky" by LA fragrance company Gendarme. Check it out at www.gendarme.com.

The Premiere Post

Finally, the first post. It's funny because everyday I say to myself, "gosh, wouldn't that be a perfect blog entry?" The reality is that I have been far too entertained discovering and rediscovering LA LA Land. So as this thing gets going, please stay tuned for a compilation of all that DG and DGPR is up to from LA and beyond. My first duty is to praise my "home away from home" - a place that I'm sure you too will love when you first sample its hospitality, warmth and amazing ambience.
